Beware 1080 Bait – Protect Your Pup on Walks

Australia’s wild beauty comes with some hidden dangers - and 1080 bait (sodium fluoroacetate) is one of the most serious. Used to control foxes, wild dogs, and pests, 1080 is highly toxic to domestic dogs, even in small doses. It’s commonly used in bushland, regional properties, and national parks, and poisoning can be fatal.

What’s the Risk?

  • 1080 bait is often buried or hidden in meat and can be impossible to spot on walks.
  • According to the Ban1080.org.au map, 1080 is widespread across Australia, with significant use in WA, NSW, QLD, and VIC.
  • Around 6 million hectares of land are treated with 1080 in Australia each year - that’s larger than the entire state of Tasmania.

How to Protect Your Dog

If you’re walking or camping in an area where 1080 bait is a risk, a breathable, secure muzzle can be a literal lifesaver.

We recommend muzzles like the Baskerville Ultra Muzzle, which are:

  • Rigid enough to prevent scavenging
  • Designed to allow panting and drinking
  • Lightweight and comfortable for longer wear

It’s also smart to:

  • Keep your dog on a leash in high-risk areas
  • Check the Ban1080 map before heading out
  • Train a strong “leave it” command
